EA Sports is taking its Madden NFL series off the cyber grass and into the real world with its "Ring of a Champion" promo in cooperation with Minnesota jeweler Jostens to award elite players a chance to get tokens that will show off their accomplishments.
Jostens has created roughly half the championship rings given out in the history of the Super Bowl. Now, players of the video game version can have the honor of wearing a ring from the same maker by accomplishing virtual achievements of cyber-athleticism. That and a little sum for the piece, of course.
Users will have to pass through three skill levels to prove that they've got game in them. Once the challenges are conquered, a code is given in order to unlock the Madden "Ring of a Champion" promo on the Jostens website. You can then choose a design you want and decide whether you want it in white or yellow gold. Those go for US 495, while the ones with real diamonds sell for a higher, undisclosed amount. Basic ones...

Wondering about what really happened at Sony's PressCon over at the recently concluded E3? Well wonder no more cause we have for you a full 33:49 minute-video on their presentation, in full HD! Exciting, huh?
Yeah, they did open up the show with some cool visuals before having Jack Tretton, SCEA CEO, give a quick introductory note inside PlayStation Home. Or at least his avatar. And then he appears live on the E3 stage. Without skipping a beat, he went on to basically give an outline of the stuff they'll be showcasing. And then came the juicy parts.
Content, content, and more content. According to Tretton, Sony has got some 50 titles in their lineup for release this year alone across all Sony platforms. Of course, this obviously includes the much-coveted PlayStation 3. A rundown of the titles were then shown on the screens, causing our hearts to beat just a little faster with every short trailer playing on the particular platform it's heading to. One of the more defin...

Analyst Michael Pachter may have swung and missed with his prediction on the Microsoft Xbox 360 dropping prices in E3, but that hasn't fazed him on issuing some more fearless forecasts regarding console prices.
The Wedbush Morgan analyst has been vocal about his thoughts on a Sony PlayStation 3 price cut this year and he was proven right with recent announcements made by the electronics giant. This time, he predicts that the new 80GB version of the PS3 which launches bundled with MotorStorm at US 599 will follow its 60GB siblings.
Pachter explains that there are still around two to three million 60GB models left in the shelves. A price cut should hasten the sale of the soon-to-be-discontinued model to make way for the 80GB version. Once the 80-giggers fully replace earlier versions, their price tags should fall to US 499 as well.
"Once these units are sold through, we expect the company to lower the price of its 80GB model to US 499 on a standalone basis,...

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves already caused quite a stir with his statement that the 60GB PS3 would soon be no more, and it looks like he's now set to kick up another hubbub, telling GamesIndustry.biz that he expects the PS3 to be "the winner" by March of next year. As if that wasn't a bold enough proclamation, he said that the PS3 "will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08," adding that "it's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you." Let's just hope that tsunami comes at a discount.

I know that Gary just posted about UT3, but I thought I’d start another post to talk about what UT3 says about the PS3. In particular, there’s this UT3 article and this rundown of UT3 mods over at Kotaku says the following:
I’ve always felt that user-created content has long been a sort of holy grail [...]

The HD DVD Promotional Group recently claimed that 74% of the market share for European high-definition DVD players is held by HD DVD, but the Blu-ray Disc Association points out that they conveniently "forgot" to include PS3s and PC drives in their count. Including those puts Blu-ray in the lead instead, with almost 95% of hardware sales. HD DVD lobbyists contend that most who buy game consoles don't even use them for watching high-def movies, while everyone who bought an HD DVD player will do exactly that. The fact that the PS3 is still basically cheaper than many of the standalone high-def players (Blu-ray or HD DVD) means it's not exactly honest to discount them completely either. All we know is that the format war continues, but as long as prices continue to fall, it's tough for the average consumer to complain about that.

Adding a negligible amount of fuel to a fire which should probably just burn out already, industry analyst Michael Pachter predicts that the 80GB PS3 will drop in price to $499 once the remaining stocks of the 60GB version have sold through. Of course, Sony has flip-flopped so much on this issue that it's hard to take this sort of "news" with anything other than a massive grain of salt. Regardless, according to Mr. Pachter, "the Sony entry level price of USD 499 is here to stay." So frugal PS3 fans, take heart... or don't take heart. Honestly, it's just really tough to say right now.

After 3 days of waiting for the promised 17 price cut for the PlayStation 3 - as relayed by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Managing Director Michael Ephraim - Australians were instead given value packs with 2 free SIXAXIS controllers thrown in along with a game. The value pack is estimated to have a price value of US 125.
Since they already spend about US 400 more for a PS3 unit than U.S. gamers, Australian PlayStation fans wonder if the move was done in an effort to make up for lost profits, or "price gouging."
On the UK side of the fence, gamers resorted to protesting that Sony did not keep the promise of the price cut, but instead received a starter pack similar to what the Australians were offered in lieu of discounted PS3 units. "The starter pack means customers are getting 115 of added value for the same price," said a Sony UK spokesman. "How can that possibly be ripping people off?"
The price cut supposedly meant for the UK market was cancele...

The E3 Media and Business Summit 2007 has drawn to a close but the trailers for upcoming games are still trickling in from GameTrailers. Today, we got another alien shooting video from Midway Games' BlackSite: Area 51 (PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360).
In this new video, the player in on a helicopter battling a hydra-like monster called a Flathead. The Flathead is basically sitting in the middle of a bridge, taking swings at the chopper and spitting balls... well, projectiles. The player will be able to gun it down using the chopper's mounted machine gun, though as you will see on the video, it will take a while. Such is the action in BlackSite: Area 51.
This first person alien shooter is still set for release in September, so you better be ready for that. In the meantime, check out the video.

It's been a long time since we saw Killzone 2's first trailer. Back in E3 2005, countless skeptics and PS3 fanboys bantered like cats and dogs about the trailer, which was intended to be a target render of the visuals in the final version of the game. Fortunately, 2007 marks the end of all arguments. A couple years have passed before we actually saw the game in real-time. Was the target achieved?
Let's take a look at this video that conveniently placed the E3 2005 and 2007 trailers side by side. The glaring differences lie on lighting and particle effects. Fire and debris also look more realistic when pre-rendered. Outside that, Killzone 2 almost faithfully reproduced what amazed everyone two years ago.
To be fair, the edge of pre-rendered over real-time graphics for Killzone 2 is not as radical as previous games we've seen. Some would complain, but this giant title from Sony is indeed a huge step up from past generations. Definitely a next-gen element than say, real-...
