As part of their recent Resistance: Fall of Man reader event, IGN Australia got the chance to sit down and chat with Insomniac Games CEO and President Ted Price. Read on for some snippets off the interview.

On how long Resistance was in development. Price declined to give specifics on this during the IGN event, but he did say that it "wasn't an overly-long development process." Price said that the time was used to "kind of re-engineer our internal systems to address the initial complexity of the PS3, and all of the opportunities that the PS3 offered for us."

On Resistance's online community. While Price was unable to give out specific numbers without calling "the guys at the office," he did show great enthusiasm about the continually growing numbers. "More and more people are buying Resistance right now as more and more PS3s get out there, and we've watched the numbers grow daily in terms of the hours being played in the game," said Price. "I think word-of-mouth h...

It seems that what was once Sony territory has found itself moving slowly away from the company, finding its gaming kicks on other consoles. Next Gen Ireland reports that Ireland isn't as Sony-savvy as it used to be.

They asked 200 respondents about their views on the PS3's launch. When asked about whether or not they'd be buying a PS3 during launch, Next Gen was surprised by what they discovered. Instead of a resounding affirmative, they found themselves with a different response altogether:

72 would not be purchasing the PS3 on launch with an overwhelming 82 of those people complaining that the machine was far too expensive and had nothing new to bring to the table.

82 of the respondents were more or less set on buying either an Xbox 360 or Wii, with 68 of the respondents hesitant to purchase a PS3 unit at any future point in time.

Not exactly heartening news for the PS3, but with only 200 respondents, it's only a small indication of what's occ...

Japan and North America are already enjoying their bit of Sega's Virtua Fighter 5 for the PS3. And while Europe still has got some waiting to do, it's never too late nor too early to gear up for this versus fighting title.

So, apart from cracking your knuckles and stretching your arms in preparation for one tough game, you might as well prepare your controllers, too. And no, we ain't just talking about the usual SIXAXIS PS3 controller.

If you head on over to Amazon right now, you'll see that they've got a rather interesting accessory up for sale. It's HORI's PS3 Fighting Stick. See that picture right there? That's what it looks like. And it's pretty obvious from the name of the product just what it's supposed to do. And here's a lineup of what it has:

Turbo function with hold & switch buttonsSlow, normal and fast Turbo settingsIncludes HOME button with the same functionality as the PS button on SIXAXIS controllersLever and buttons are position...

Game Videos recently put up this new Unreal Tournament 3 video just pulsing with action. It seems to highlight a whole new deathmatch map and two (at least we think they're two different ones) capture-the-flag maps. Throughout this minute-and-a-half clip, you can see the same old assortment of weapons, although they been spruced up to look better and upgraded.

Although the player's favorite gun seems to be the rocket launcher (still three-barrelled, we noticed), other oldies such as the plasma rifle, the shock rifle and (ooh-la-la) flak cannon will be making the cut for UT3. All weapons seem to have been redesigned from the ground up, looking...err...a little freakier...than the ones in Unreal Tournament 2004.

Keep a keen ear toward the announcer's voice, too. The entire look of the game seems to have gone down a much grimmer road. Epic Game's masterpiece being marketed under Gears of War's shadow is set for release at the later half of 2007 for the PC, Xbox 360 and ...

Frank and Ben of Arstechnica recently had an online debate regarding the importance of backwards compatibility for this generation of game consoles. Frank played the affirmative while Ben played the negative. Both men raised good points on the matter, citing nice examples to back up their solid arguments.

Frank opened the debate by saying that more than anything else, backwards compatibility is a very big bonus to gamers. He cited the negative press surrounding the PS3's woes regarding the matter. News broke out last week that the European version of the PS3 carries new hardware specs but will have limited compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. Frank said that for the prices that the PS3 commands, Sony ought to dish out more value to the end users.

He said that owners of this generation's consoles who did not have the predecessor to their machine will eventually feel the need to play legacy titles of the old console. He also said that old games help m...

In an interview with gaming news site MyGEN, Insomniac games President and CEO Ted Price confirms that Insomniac does indeed have plans for future iterations of their PlayStation 3 game Resistance: Fall of Man.

When asked about patch updates and downloadable content, Price took the time to highlight the first patch for the game that's already out, and the time and effort they took to balance the game experience. A bit of conversation about multiplayer features followed that, and then Price was asked if they'll be able to top the already great weapon set in Resistance in future versions of RFOM. He had this to say: "Looking at what people proposed during Resistance, and seeing the excitement about the game at the company, I feel confident that as the franchise grows, we'll be able to surprise people over and over again."

There was a slight bit of talk about the Ratchet and Clank franchise again, and then he then goes to say this: "What I said today on stage ...

Aussie news entity, The Australian, reports that Sony Computer Entertainment and it's partners in the wonderful, exciting, gut-wrenching, and aneurysm inducing world of retail, will spend a whopping AU 7 million (US 5.5 million) over the next six weeks.

Reports say that much of the marketing will be focused on giving people hands-on experience actually playing the console. The motto is "Demo, demo, demo," according to SCE Managing Director Michael Ephraim, and even he admits that people really, really, need that trial to be convinced that the AU 999.95 (US 792.12) price tag for Sony's PlayStation 3 is worth it.

Given that the Motorstorm demo is insanely fun, and addictive (this blogger has put off finishing that "tunnels to London stage" in RFOM because of it) it seems that Sony is finally doing the right thing and they're letting the console speak for itself.

Let's just  hope that they demo stuff like Resistance, Motorstorm, and flOw, an...

A tech guy from Sony disclosed this information under the direction of Sony PR boss Dave Karakker. Now if it only has 128 bits and my Dreamcast has 128, doesn't that make them just as powerful? Apparently, bits aren't in vogue anymore, and aren't an accurate measure of the power of the system.

According to the tech guy:

Most single pieces of data fit in 32 or 64 bits. The benefit of 128 bits is that you can operate on 4 pieces of 32-bit data at the same time, which is called SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data). This is only useful for data that needs the same operation on all 4 pieces, which is common in games for things such as 3D graphical transformations, physical simulation, collision detection, etc. 128-bits is the "sweet spot" of price and performance, so that is what everyone seems to have settled upon.

To get more power, people have instead now been moving to more processor cores. (PS3 has 8, Xbox 360 has 3, Wii has 1, PS2 had 1 2 special...

Them's some fighting words over at Nintendo's camp. According to the video interview, the folks who shot Spike TV's Game Head segments managed to catch Reggie Fils-Aime making a rather pointed attack on the PS3.

In relation to the PS3's current spate of negative media attention and the long lines for PS3's opening days, Reggie made a pass towards the spate of PlayStation 3-related shootings and violence. As caught on camera, Fils-Aime said, "Were those the people ducking to not get shot or...? I'm just not sure."

In contrast to those statements, Phil Harrison focused more on how many people were satisfied with their purchase because they bought a PS3 and were entertained by it. Said Harrison,

We are creating technology that empowers entertainment for people. And ultimately, it's the people who spend their money, who buy the machine, who love the machine, who have a tremendous relationship with that machine...

In any event, here's the fourth segmen...

First the 360, then the Wii, now the PS3 is getting its own shot at arcade glory. With Virtua Fighter 5 on all those Sony fanboy wishlists, it's only natural to have a shiny controller like this Hori PS3 Fighting Stick number to pull off those nifty-keen combos with Akira Yuki and company. You can pick up one of these wired and turbo-filled controllers for about $50.
