Whenever we talk about the technical aspects of our beloved PlayStation 3, we definitely cannot and should not miss its cell processor. Sony has always maintained that they actually plan to use this on a variety of applications.

While its usage is confined within the console for now, the company confirmed that these other applications will be available on the early parts of 2008. But now, Toshiba seems to leap out of nowhere and mentions that it will beat Sony in marketing consumer electronics devices containing the said microprocessor.

It is no less than Yoshihide Fujii himself, President and CEO of Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company, who reiterated and highlighted that they are planning to do the same with the chip. Furthermore, Fujii mentioned that their time line is actually the same as that of Sony's but they will try to unveil products as early as late 2007. He will not, however, divulge what types of products or applications Toshiba is eyeing for the C...

Game Designer Earnest Adams has an article out on Gamasutra that looks at how the PS3 stacks up against the Wii game-design wise. Yes, we understand that topics like this are a bit too flame-bait-y, so here's what we'll do. We'll post two things (one positive and one negative) that Adams has to say for each console. And then we'll leave it all up to you guys.

Let's start with the PS3. So what does the PS3 have, from a designer's perspective, that makes it a great console? Here are Adam's words:

It s a big step, and technically speaking, the inclusion of the Cell processor is a very important and challenging innovation. Most game programmers don t know much about multiprocessing. The PS3 raises the bar, and to get the most out of it requires some high-level wizardry.
And the major turn-off? The thing that will make some game designers frown upon the console?

From a design standpoint, however, the PS3 is evolutionary, not revolutionary. It doesn t...

What's with three anyway? Yeah, we know, PS3, but they're overdoing it. At least all those Wii-puns are cute or annoying enough to irritate your friends with. Anyway, on to the news.

Steve Boxer has a post up over at Three Speech detailing the Three Speech event that took over Sony's 3Rooms PS3 demo in London's Shoreditch. Most of the post details the multimedia functions that all you folks, our readership, are probably aware of already. The post does offer a nice promise though: a remote PSP to PS3 connection.

Here's Steve Boxer's words:

Sony confirmed that, at some point in the future, it will be possible to access the PS3 from your PSP remotely (that is, beyond WiFi range), so if, say, you re overseas, you ll still be able to download all the multimedia content on your home PS3 to your PSP.
That's the hottest part about the three speech's post. If we talk anymore about Three Speech itself, it'll be flame bait. Yeah, Three Speech is still pimping....

Pachter's a pretty stand-up guy. He's the type who knows that he's in a position where he can say things and people will listen to him - and boy does he say things. Pachter's got cred - analyst, money-wise, business-y cred. N'gai Croal on the other hand, has a nice mix of journalistic and gamer credibility. So when the two meet, you just know that something blog-worthy is bound to come up.

The N'gai Pachter interview covers everything from N64 and the DS all the way to the PS3 and the Xbox 360. It's a bit long so we'll show some of the more amusing from the interview. Let's start with something about the PS3:

Because of the phenomenal success of PlayStation and PlayStation 2, it's safe to assume that Playstation 3 has started at a higher point on the demand curve than Xbox 360. But it's also started at a lower point on the supply curve than the 360, and it's $200 more expensive than its main rival. Are you predicting the PS3's sales growth to be faster, slower ...

And people were saying that the demand for the PS3 is dying down. Perhaps the truth is far from that. Just look at how fast the folks at Woot sold their stock:

Yeah, that's 80 units in four minutes.

I'd like to make an odd pop-culture reference right now about fast sales and hot products, but I can't. So I'll just take time to tell you guys that if you want to check it out for yourselves, just so you know we're not BSing you guys, all you have to do is use the URL in our VIA link below and then click on "product stats."

According to an enterprising conspiracy theory of sorts from 1Up, that may just be the case. We're hoping it's less of a theory and more of a very subtle hint for Microsoft's game community to notice and clamor for.

The latest entry in Pandemic Studios' video blogs is the main reason for this speculation. While the Pandemic team has mentioned considering the 360 as a platform for Mercenaries 2, they haven't really done anything to prove it. However, gaming fans will notice possible hints in the video that they may actually be busier than we think.

The eager gaming fan will notice that their holiday-related video blog has some instances where an Xbox 360 is shown. There's even a debug unit in the video and some scenes of people handling the 360 controller while talking to the camera. Whether or not that translates into an assurance of an Xbox 360 version of the game when it launches in 2007 is yet to be ascertained, but doing so would mean yet another PS3 exclusive giv...

For a game development company known as Starbreeze Studios, they make some pretty dark games. Better known for The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, they'll also be responsible for bringing Jacky Estacado from the comic books and onto the console with PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of The Darkness.

While they're still skimpy with the details, they still manage to crank out screenshots for us to wonder about. How will they implement darkling usage? Is it going to be some sort of temporary team-based thing or are they going to skimp out on making the darklings an integral part of his being a Mafia hitman? More importantly, does anyone's granddad look like the one in the screenshot?

See? That's how creepy it is. Expect your grandpa to pay a visit to your console with his new friend Jackie come 2007.

Wow, Red Kawa's been doing a lot of stuff lately, and they've got some new programs and updates that PS3 and Wii owners may want to try out.

First off is SofaTube. SofaTube works with the Wii to let owners watch YouTube and Revver videos on the television rather than on the PC. While using the PC is nice and all, watching streaming versions of your favorite YouTube videos seems so much more worthwhile when you're lounging around on your couch, and you don't have to squint at your TV screen to see the vids since the program resizes them for you.

Their next set of programs are PS3 Media Center X and Wii Media Center X. These apps let you stream specific video, image, and music files from your computer to the respective console. Combined with the PS3 Video 9 and Wii Video 9 video formatting apps, these should open up some more options for people hoping to make the most out of their console. They're still in alpha stage, however, so input on how they work on your co...

Sony and Toshiba may have been in cahoots when they worked on the Cell processor, but now that it's out, Toshiba is throwing its pants on and running out the door. Yoshihide Fujii, Toshiba's digital media network CEO, is claiming they'll be the first company to put the Cell processor in your living room. Nevermind that Sony's PS3 already beat them to it, Fujii is determined to beat his partner/rival to the punch. Meanwhile Sony's also rushing to put the Cell CPU in their own HDTVs and home theater equipment. This puts both Goliaths in a race to deliver Cell CPU-based gear. Maybe both companies should first check to see if people care enough about the Cell processor to put it in their living room in the first place. – Louis Ramirez
