Ok, so the PlayStation 3 wasn't exactly the most flexible high def device out of the gate; despite Sony's claims, DVDs aren't upscaled, there's no component out, and from what we've heard, even though its HDMI 1.3 output technically supports 1080p/24 (for the uninitiated, that's 24fps to match a film master print), we understand it's not yet playable as such. (Note: we've yet to try 1080p/24, as we don't have any media mastered thusly.) However, this could change according to a translated Impress interview of Sony PS3 A/V developers. Obviously something is bound to be lost in translation, but if the text reads correctly then the PS3 will not only be getting software SACD support, but it'll also get user-selectable internal YCrCb image processing (instead of RGB -- although we've yet to hear of component output plans), 1080p/24 support, and will finally allow for DVD upscaling as well. We have no idea exactly when this will happen (or why this wasn't made c...

It looks like screwed up resolution support isn't the only kink Sony needs to iron out of its fancy new PS3 system. Reports are rampant of SIXAXIS controllers having quite a bit of trouble staying synced via Bluetooth. Pretty much the only way to rectify the problem is to plug the controller into the PS3 via USB and manually re-sync it, but that's little consolation when your controller locks up in the middle of a Resistance deathmatch or mid-drift in Ridge Racer 7. There are similar reports of a Wii-controller mishaps, but it seems the SIXAXIS has it particularly bad. No official response from Sony yet, but we'll be keeping an ear out.

We know how much you love reading about the PlayStation 3 and potentially illegal things, so let's combine the two, shall we? It looks like enterprising hackers have figured out a way to dump Blu-ray movies using nothing more than a PS3 and Linux. Now, there's a whole lot of Linux jargon to comb through, but the premise is simple: boot up the appropriate flavor of Linux, then input the command "dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/blu-raymovie.iso" and that should do it. It's interesting to note that similar methods are used to dump ("back up") PS3 games themselves.
The first movie dumped was Talledega Night and it comes in at an impressive 20.9GB. So if you bought a PS3 with the 60GB hard drive you should be all set; those with a 20GB will need to invest in an external hard drive. Don't tell Sony we told you or anything. – Nicholas Deleon

We're still waiting for the dust to settle here, but it looks like the "Father of the PlayStation," Ken Kutaragi, has been bumped out of his top spot as President of Sony Computer Entertainment, to be replaced by Kaz Hirai, the President of CEO of SCE America. Ken will now be Chairman and Group CEO, while Kaz while take on the role of President and Group COO, effective December 1st. While Ken will have oversight of the PlayStation in his new roles, it sounds like he's been largely been removed from the day-to-day operations to make way for the talented Kaz to do his thing. Speculation is rampant as to whether this is a "promotion" for Kutaragi, in order for him to think "big picture" for his console prodigy, or a demotion in response to the numerous PS3 launch foibles -- we're guessing the latter. What we do know that SCEA will, for the first time, be helmed by an American: Jack Tretton, who we're sure to be seeing plenty of over the next few years.

Last night my friends and I played Resistance on my new PS3. I still like hearing those words. My new PS3. Not to gloat or anything. (I noticed when loading up my game that my PS3 hardly collects any dust. I wonder what people are complaining about.)
Anyway, Resistance is a great game, but [...]

PathEngine is very pleased to announce that their SDK for intelligent agent movements just got upgraded. On top of that, the company is also very proud that Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios took notice of their program and will be using it for future multi-platform projects.
The software, that goes by the same name as its developer, is aimed to implement points-of-visibility pathfinding on three-dimensional ground meshes. The latest version, v5.05, includes support for the generation of pathfinding ground meshes, directly from un-marked-up 3D scene representations. With the inclusion of arbitrary polygon soups, run-time, and resulting movements becomes much easier to understand.
Furthermore, Avalanche Studios, wouldn't divulge yet the title or the nature of its upcoming title. However, they ascertained that it will be on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC.
PathEngine v5.05 comes as well with a new content process that generates explicit world r...
